Nomadic Owls seal

Colophon

WASHI

One of ten design directions built for Nomadic Owls. This one is the restraint showcase: sumi-e ink minimalism, where the whitespace is the design and everything that felt decorative was removed.

The concept

Ma — negative space as luxury

Ma is the Japanese idea that emptiness is not absence but material — the pause that gives a note its weight. The page holds one owl, one brushstroke language, and one red seal; everything else is paper. Whitespace ratios carry the hierarchy that borders and boxes would normally carry.

Japanese is used only as ambient art: vertical tategaki labels name each section — 序 intro, 業 practice, 作 works, 便 letter — always with a Latin translation beside them. Nothing on the site requires reading Japanese.

Design system

Three colors, two faces, one scale

Washi white

#F6F4EE

Sumi charcoal

#1C1C1A

Vermilion seal

#C63D2F

Vermilion is spent like a hanko stamp: the seal mark in the header and the single call-to-action at the close. Everything else is ink on paper. Type is Zen Old Mincho for display and Zen Kaku Gothic New for text — self-hosted, subset per unicode-range so only the glyphs in use are ever downloaded. Sizes come from one strict modular scale; when a size was in doubt, it was deleted rather than added.

Tech & motion

Motion at breathing pace

Static Astro 5, custom CSS, no framework runtime. Every transition uses one easing — cubic-bezier(0.37, 0, 0.63, 1), a sine in-out — at 900–1600 ms, the tempo of a slow breath. Elements arrive with a small upward drift and a fade, like ink settling into fiber. Nothing bounces.

Hovers speak ink, not color: underlines bleed outward from a short stroke, service numbers bloom with a soft ink halo, and the vermilion CTA presses down with a slight rotation like a hanko meeting paper.

The hero video is encoded as its own mirror — forward then reversed, concatenated with FFmpeg — so the native loop attribute plays a seamless ping-pong forever: the ink bleeds out, then breathes back in. All ink artwork sits on the paper through mix-blend-mode: multiply, so the white of the source images dissolves into the page. With prefers-reduced-motion, the video rests as its poster frame and every reveal is instant.

AI assets

Three assets, quoted verbatim

All imagery was generated via the Higgsfield CLI. The prompts below are recorded exactly as run.

washi-owl

GPT Image 2 — quality high, 2K, aspect 2:3

The hero still. A few confident brushstrokes; the entire brand rests on this one image.

Sumi-e ink wash painting of an owl, a few confident expressive brushstrokes, black sumi ink with subtle gray gradations on plain white washi paper, large empty negative space, Japanese minimalist zen brush painting, no text, no letters, no seal, no watermark

washi-strokes

GPT Image 2 — quality high, 2K, aspect 16:9

Three horizontal brushstrokes, cropped into individual section dividers and blended into the paper with mix-blend-mode: multiply.

Three separate abstract horizontal sumi ink brushstrokes on plain white washi paper, dry-brush texture with flying white streaks, expressive calligraphy energy, black ink only, lots of empty white space between strokes, Japanese zen minimalism, no text, no letters, no characters, no watermark

washi-inkbleed

Kling 2.6 image-to-video — 5 s, sound off, aspect 9:16, start image: washi-owl

The living hero. The owl's ink bleeds into the paper; encoded as a forward-plus-reverse ping-pong loop so it breathes forever without a cut.

The sumi ink brushstrokes of the owl slowly bleed and feather into the white washi paper, ink edges softly spreading like watercolor, extremely subtle slow motion, camera completely static, meditative, nothing else moves

How to reproduce

The full recipe

  1. Generate the three assets above with their exact prompts (images: GPT Image 2, quality high, 2K; video: Kling 2.6, 5 s, sound off, start image = the owl still).
  2. Optimize: stills to WebP at display size; crop the three strokes into separate dividers; encode the video as forward + reverse ping-pong (FFmpeg reverse + concat, H.264, CRF 27) and pull its first frame as the poster.
  3. Scaffold Astro 5 static, self-host Zen Old Mincho 400 and Zen Kaku Gothic New 400/500 via Fontsource.
  4. Set the three colors and one modular type scale as custom properties; let mix-blend-mode: multiply sink every ink asset into the paper.
  5. Reveal everything with one IntersectionObserver and one sine easing at breath pace; spend vermilion at most three times.
  6. Delete anything that survives only as decoration. Repeat until it hurts, then once more.
